But don’t just take our word for it. Check out what Shona has been up to since she graduated...

“When I left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. So I told my parents I was moving to the beach for a year, and off I went to Whitianga. It was there that I discovered Dive Zone Whitianga and decided their Wilderness Adventure Tourism Diploma (the precursor to the new Diploma course) was the perfect fit for me. And it was the best year of my life. I really loved it and would recommend it to anyone wondering ‘where to from here?’ It was an amazing course, that even though the main component was diving, it also gave me lots of other outdoor experiences.

After my course, I stayed on at Dive Zone Whitianga and taught dive courses before eventually leaving and travelling around Indonesia and Australia. It was in Australia that I came across an advert wanting divers to go out with tour groups and that started my adventure with Mike Ball Diving Expeditions. I’ve spent the last two years going out on live-aboard dive expeditions aboard the Spoillsport - a 30m catamaran custom-built to provide superb dive and guest facilities. We live on the boat for three weeks out of the month doing expeditions to the Coral Sea, Great Barrier Reef and the Torres Strait. I cannot believe I am here doing what I love, and getting paid for it!

One of the more intense jobs I’ve had was for a promotional video where I had to go down and open the feeder boxes to attract tiger sharks, so divers could get up close with them. The tigers knew the routine and there were always some waiting for the food. The only hiccup I had was once when the box wouldn’t open and they thought I was being a bit slow, so gave me few a nudges. I have never been scared diving, but that sure gave me a great adrenaline rush!

On leaving Dive Zone Whitianga, I’d become a qualified PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and now I have over 2000 dives under my belt. At the moment, a group of us are planning our ‘Ultimate Dive Adventure’ - we’re planning to drive from London to Cape Town and dive all along the East African coastline and document it as we go.  After that, I want to get my skippers ticket, and I might throw in some engineering training in the mix too. Right now, I’m just taking each glorious day as it comes.”
