Diving New Zealand waters offers some of the best diving in the world.  A career that gets you into our fantastic marine environment is a dream for many.  Dive Zone Whitianga has a range of course options, designed by industry experts, to prepare you to enter the dive industry with qualifications needed to be employed anywhere in the world.

Our Diploma in Professional Scuba Instruction is our lead course programme that will take you from a beginner diver through to a PADI Specialty Scuba Diving Instructor in just one year (44 weeks including 4 weeks study leave).

Not ready or able to undertake full time study for a year? Then talk to us about our National Certificate courses. These are footsteps along with pathway to becoming an Instructor with industry recognised qualifications along the way that will provide you with employment opportunities.  

The Diploma and National Certificate courses are Internationationally recognised qualifications and allow you to find a job in over 183 countries & territories in the world.  Have the satisfaction of teaching the joys of scuba diving to people of all ages and from all walks of life.  Go on to work in Conservation or Eco tourism, Research or Aquaculture.  Become an Underwater Photographer or Underwater Camera Technician.  Work on one of the amazing super yachts and crew around the world, or enter the New Zealand job market with all the skills ready to make you the perfect addition to a busy Dive Centre here in our own beautiful New Zealand.

These national qualifications developed for the diving industry by the Industry Training Organisation (Skills Active Aotearoa) are designed to guide the non diver safely through basic scuba diving, advanced scuba diving, specialties (such as night diving, wreck diving, boat diving and search and recovery) through to competency in advanced instructional and specialty instructional levels, provided all requirements are met.  As a graduate, you may choose to work within the dive and outdoor recreation industry or you may choose to continue tertiary studies.


National Certificate In Diving

The National Certificate In Diving qualifications consist of three National Certificates designed to guide the non diver safely through basic scuba diving, advanced scuba diving, speciaties such as night diving, wreck diving, deep diving, boat diving and search and recovery.

Graduates of the National Certificate In Diving may choose to either continue tertiary studies, or utilise your newly-acquired skills and work within the dive and outdoor recreation industries.

Each National Certificate course is 12 weeks long if studying full-time, but can also be completed on a part-time basis.   


Diploma in Professional Scuba Instruction

For those wanting to take things one step further, the Diploma course has been designed to produce dive instructors with the qualifications and skills required to enter this dynamic and exciting industry.

Dive Zone WhitiangaAfter completing the Diploma in Professional Scuba Instruction, graduates will be fully trained and ready to enter the scuba dive industry either here in New Zealand or abroad as a PADI Specialty Instructor.  Talk to us about enrolling in a Diploma in Professional Scuba Instruction and become a PADI Specialty Dive Instructor.  We have two intakes per year being February and August.

 About The Academy of Diving Trust  

Academy of Diving Trust is registered as a Private Training Establishment by NZQA and has approval to subcontract to Dive Zone Whitianga. We offer a range of part-time & full time career qualifications at our Whitianga location. Our tertiary programmes are student loan approved for NZ citizens and persons who have held NZ permanent residency for a minimum of 2 years.  Our career training programmes meet the Goverments Fees Free Policy for eligible students (criteria applies).  We can assist you in ascertaining whether you qualify for up to $12,000 in free funding.

The Academy was first registered by NZQA in 1991 and is New Zealand’s oldest tertiary dive provider.

On successful completion of your chosen qualification, you will have a high degree of scuba diving skills and emerge a competent and confident diver. Graduates will be ready to enter the dive and outdoor recreation industry either here in New Zealand, or abroad.
